With Alexa.com you can check the what is your popularity of a site. As such, it is a good way to measure successfulness of search engine optimization. We use Alexa rank for approximate calculation of popularity and traffic. I never used it as a very accurate tool for assessing improvement of website popularity. But it does help a bit. From our experience, We learned that Alexa uses some of these points to calculate their rank.
1. Traffic received by the website.
2. Quality and amount of contents.
3. Bounce rate and CTR ( Connected to point 1 )
4. Avg. daily visitors and Time spend on a website, including page views.
5. Internal links and Backlinks to the websites. Especially from sites related to your blog/ site niche.
6. Mistakes from Alexa team. Yup, it is not perfect.
7. Addition of Alexa widget & usage of their toolbar.
8. Multiple URL requests from the same user ?..( possible ranking factor )
9. Monitored traffic sources and un-monitored sources. ( might make difference )
10. User interaction and social media activity ( ? )
